Memorial Day

This is one of the days when I miss living in a small town. If we were in Happy, we would be at the cemetery right now for the annual Memorial Day program. We would see school kids helping with the program and representatives from every generation on up. It is always a great time to see everyone and catch up. The last time I was there, there were still World War II veterans who would be in attendance and be recognized. I'm not sure how many are left now, but I know they are still recognized. We spent many a day walking around "visiting" after the program. By visiting I mean finding the graves of family and friends and reminiscing. Some people might find this strange, but if you are from a small town, I bet you can relate.

Some years we have cut wheat from our fields to put on my Dad's headstone, other years it has been yucca blooming in the pastures and ditches. My grandmother had certain people she bought fresh flowers for, and other people who got silk. Now that job falls to my Mama and sister.

If I were there today, I would visit my Dad, my Granddad Frank and Grandma Gracie, my PaPa Eugene, my Grandmother Sims, and my Uncle Jerry. I hope that one of these years we will be there on Memorial Day so my children can experience it.

The Graduate

When asked what it means to graduate, Jake replied, "It means that we are done practicing."

Counselor for the Day

Being counselor for the day involves very important jobs...drinking Pepsi during school is just one of the perks.

Handing out stickers and pencils during lunch duty...

helping with Ms. Stella day at morning assembly...

helping lead the hand motion song at morning assembly...

these are just a few of the things counselors do.

2nd Grade Awards

Daddy wins the parenting award for the day. He went to Josie's end-of-the-year awards program and didn't forget the camera.

Jake at the Lake

This picture has been in my camera for a few weeks, but it's too cute not to share.

No Pictures

We've been busy here...

Josie was in the second grade spelling bee yesterday. Most of the other parents were busily snapping pictures of their kids, but I forgot my camera (as usual)! She did a great job as one of the group of kids who qualified to participate in the contest, but sadly it was the word "profit" that got her.

P-R-F-I-T

Very close, but she was out.
Another teacher had offered to let me use her camera, and so she went to her classroom to get it. Unfortunately, by the time she arrived back with her camera, Josie was already out. So you'll have to use your imagination. She looked very cute

Last night was our school PTO carnival. This is an annual fundraiser for our school PTO, and it includes games, food, and a live and silent auction. Once again, no camera, but we all had fun. Cody bought a very special item at the live auction: Counselor for a Day. So Josie gets to spend an entire day out of her classroom to be with our wonderful school counselor. What a treat! I promise to bring my camera that day!

Next week is Jake's Preschool Graduation. I hear they have been practicing for a few weeks, but it is very secretive. Once again, I WILL remember my camera that night!
